For as long as I’ve known him, my Australian boyfriend has been saying that nothing compares to an Aussie meat pie. While heartbroken that he somehow missed the opening of Pop Pie Co. over two years ago, the existence of this restaurant goes a long way toward filling the void of what is considered a staple for many in other parts of the world. It’s time to make sure the rest of San Diego doesn’t miss out!
For those of you who are not familiar with meat pies, let me introduce you to your new favorite comfort food. Pop Pie Co. offers an assortment of pies ranging from savory to sweet and is suitable as a morning or evening treat.
When you walk into this corner restaurant in University Heights, you are greeted with an unmistakably cool atmosphere. “In Pie We Crust” shirts are available for sale in silent salute to the excellence of this establishment (must have!) and lights are strung from the ceiling off of pastry rollers; a truly unique vision.
Savory pies are 5” with meat, vegetarian, and vegan options all under $10. Each crust is flaky and light and the pocketed interior is popping with complimentary flavors. You’re welcome to add ketchup or hot sauce but each pie holds its own without any modification needed. Big shout out to the Roasted Veggies & Yellow Curry Pie, YUM.
Sugar lovers, eat your hearts out. Coconut Cream, Banana Nutella with Roasted Hazelnut, and Guava Cream Cheese pie are just a few options behind the glass. Coffee, ice cream, beer and tasty sides are also on site.
Happy Hour is Mon-Thurs from 2:00-5:00pm, $1 off savory pies and $3.14 draught beer. Are you strong enough to resist the witty pie references? Drive up to University Heights today!
