Hello hiking fans! If you’re an enthusiast, you’ve probably seen the photos of people posing on the well known rock sliver known as Potato Chip Rock. Yesterday, I finally ventured out to the trail with my friend Chelsea. It was wet, chilly, and absolutely beautiful.
By Poway, its approximately a 45 minute drive from the heart of San Diego to the trail head. Four miles trek up the mountain from start to finish will leave you feeling energized. However, feel free to choose your own trail length. There are many options!
The famed Potato Chip Rock is your reward for making it to the top. Not only is it neat to look at, it can hold multiple people for a photo opportunity. We decided to stay alive and save that ascent for a drier day.
Parking alongside Mt Woodson Rd is free and just a short walk up to enter the trail next to the fire station. The signs will guide your way to the entrance.
The clouds made it difficult to see anything at a distance so we focused on the trail itself. Take the time to investigate each crevice and view opportunity when you go! There are various hidden spaces to explore. Nacho, my friend’s puppy, made sure we didn’t get into too much trouble.
The rock formations are amazing, each having their own distinct features. We came across one that had shelves etched into the surface with smaller rocks in each one. We decided to start, or perhaps continue, a tradition of adding our own small rock as we passed by on our way to the top.
The trail is dog friendly, however it isn’t recommended to bring your furry friends up the trail in hot weather. Bring some water and a bowl or cup. Both of you will need it by the time you reach the top.
The trail is steep but if you continue at a steady pace, is manageable for all ages. Children as young as grade school were attempting this hike. Active families unite!
Although the weather has been decidedly on the wet side so far this season, the flowers have been loving it. You’ll see hues of yellow, purple, and red sprinkled among the rocks.
Create a memory too! If you’re looking for a challenging workout with eye catching scenery, this is the hike for you. I’ll see you on the incline!
